Re: 2 new Medal sports for Olympics 2016

The decision on the 2 new sports gets closer and the vote will be in August.

Seven Sports are under consideration.

Sit down DanceSPORTS fans you are not there.   Forget 2020, 2024 , 2028  and ...........

Whilst IOC recognition might have brought tons of trouble, fighting, division, arrogance, and punitive action it has brought little if any benefit.  A plague on the IOC I say.

Don't be a sadist OYT, must you rub more salt in the already open wound. Inclusion of all dances types : wheelchair , hip hop, rock & roll  confused  IOC.  Is that a surprise. I am confidant the confusion will all clear up by  2020.

In 2020, in an absence of miracle spinal column repair discovery   I'll be still in the wheelchair, God willing, probably joined by a few of you and those  who  competitively dance today. Do not despair, IOC is kind to dancers.  Imagine,  exempted from paying  ever increasing airfare,  visiting far away places, not understanding the language,  worrying about the effects and spread of swine flu.  Karate,  I never liked Karate anyways,  all this kicking,  it makes me sad.

will2 I am seriously concerned.  It is a very unfortunate fact that many of your past posts have been off topic very personal filled with rancour.  Yet again your words are off topic and there is a great discrepancy in your posts.

I urge you to read you own words from August 2008 when you were not wheelchair-bound and when viewing wheelchair dancers were being "moved "by their performance and had the courage to comit to wheelchair dancing.  I know that I have the greatest respect for these people as I paid tribute in the photograph I posted from the Moscow Star Championships 2009.  I thought how accurate you were when writing what one would experience as a wheelchair dancer.   However at the time your suggestion of "circus acts" upset those who were involved in wheelchair dancing.

PLEASE let it not be true what I fear.  Quite truthfully I am both upset and horrified at this moment.

will2

Let me say I admire everyone who was unfortunate to suffer injury resulting in being in a wheel chair and able to find a motivation to participate in a meaningful activity, even excell in it.

I am  moved when viewing wheelchair dancing,  and believe that once a dancer, nothing should prevent you from continuing what you used to do before you became wheelchair-bound..

That said,   what could happen if wheelchair dancing became more popular ? How would impact / change the  dance world ?

First, I cannot imagine, and would hope not ,   many competitive dancers would end up in a wheel chair.

Second, I cannot imagine a person suffering and injury, paralysis etc, would  suddanly decide that what he/she wants to do is to competitively dance.

But lets suppose there are the few brave individuals who want to visit , practice wheelchair dancing in a local dance club.

After the initial call to a dance studio the obvious questions asked would be:  Have a wheelchair  access ?    Have you an elevator ?  Have you a ramp ?  Have you proper parking enabling access from a automobile ?  Have you proper stalls in your washrooms ?

As an handicapped person I have my rights.  I want to use your facility,   how soon can you provide it ?

And once the facility is complient,  how would I in a wheelchair fit with the rest of the dancers who are not in a wheelchair ?  What would my dance association do if 'we' wanted to compete,  would all organizers be prepared to accomodate us ?

While wheelchair dance  became a rather interesting part of dance events in Europe, it is often being presented as a curiosity, a circus act.

I'd be interested to know if someone else shares my sentiment.

For the reader who feel this is some kind of handicapped bashing,  you'd be out of order, we all are handicapped in more thn one way.  This is a question of human rights to have access to facilities as everyone else...I merely ask  ,"where could this lead and the impact it would have on dance ..."

Thank you

----

One thing I can say with certainty all the handicapped athletes that I have encountered in wheelchairs and out have shown magificent spirit and determination.  There has been a total absence of the "victim" mentality you portray.

Lets just stick to the facts DanceSport is not even under consideration for the Olympics 2016 and will not make the medal sports for 2020, 2024, 2028 ad infinitum.

AMUSING.  Already the IDSF and member associations are claiming 2020 its a medal sport!
2008 to 2012 to 2016 and now 2020.   Is it a charade or a mirage?

I have no objection at all to IDSF running dancesport in the Olympics.  In fact they are welcome to it. I do not believe the day will ever dawn when dancesport is a medal sport.  Thank goodness for that.

However I object strongly to the belief of IDSF that this gives them the right to control ALL dancesport . Nothing could be further from the truth.

IOC recognition is restricted solely and only to the Olympics.  The IOC has absolutely no right legal or ethical to interfere in dancesport.

spectator100 I could not agree more and if the IDSF restricted their activities to dancesport in the Olympics it would be be better for all.

The IDSF are not as they claim the world authority for dancesport and do not have control over all competitions. It is ridiculous for them to even make such claim.

It is the IOC interference in DanceSport that has encouraged the IDSF to believe they are all powerful.

Personally I doubt that dancesport will even be amongst the final candidates for consideration for 2020. I believe there has to be 7years between the date of the announcement of the new medal sport and the date of the Games. That means for 2020 we are looking at 2013.

Not the old chestnut, 2020 now!  Surely all the strings on the IDSF Olympivc Viloin are worn out by now.

Then again they love being out of tune so it figures.

Another reason why dancesport under IDSF has no chance of becoming a medal sport    http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/summer08/baseball/news/story?id=3549860

The BEST of course means the WDC and their members.  The big question then is whether the Olympics with all their rules, regulations, forbidding partnerships of mixed nationality, etc.  will be of benefit to dance.  Most people who think the thing through decide NO.

I understand that Bridge and Chess are lobbying hard for inclusion in 2020.  They believe they have a real chance and especially as men and woman compete on equal terms.

The problem up till now it seems they have lacked "Physical activity".   At least no subjective judging.

Will they change the rules and run and round the table as they play :)

I agree openeyes that for dancesport the Olympics would not be a good thing.
