You make a good point, there is no structured club system for English Dancesport and the amateur association appears to lack the vision to provide a more pro-active progressive approach to look at the best organisations around the world who enable more competitve dancers, and adopt some of their best ideas.  England still has no co-ordinated team support for English Amatuer Dancers and hence most couples have to go it alone.  The Amateur association seems more concerned with applyling rules and sanctions rather than creating real team support and real encouragement and support. Things will change, the question is when?

What we need is a hefty amount of lottery funding to fill EADAs coffers and fly our best 12 couples (if we have that many) down to London (or possibly a travelling workshop around England) each weekend for coaching. Then the remaining couples can pay to attend or they have to improve and make it into that top 12. We can then have the best coaches teaching them, fly in 'guest' coaches from around the world and practice all weekend! ..... now wouldn't that be nice!! We could even have EADA showcases on a Saturday night with the couples that have attended and make a bit more money to help with training / accomodation etc? ....... EADA needs to do more for the Brit couples and jump aboard the 'Strictly Dancing Band Wagon' to make the most of it whilst it is still there. Ohhh, if only we could breathe new life into our amateur associations (and get Pro buy in for that matter)

SCD has certainly given new interest to Dance in the UK and the opportunities it gives should not be missed, however, I'm not sure I would want to give lottery money to EADA.  They managed to lose the UK Sports Council funding with no comparable replacement source of funding other than EADA members. The fees have grown significantly over recent years but not as rapidly as the amount of rules!! Maybe its time for a new approach and an alternative organisation to support English Amateurs that has a different culture that is really in touch and engaged with Dance on a world scale that has some passion and vigour to support a team approach to all English Dancing.

Wonderful idea Tony,

Lets hope that EADA take this idea and work with it. What a treat and incentive it would be for the couples, and it would be beneficial for the future of British Dancing.

Will anything in England ever change, quite honestly I very very much doubt it. Many postings on various forums over a lot of years have discussed this at length but at the end of the day if nobody is prepared to take the bull by the horns and do anything then things will remain exactly as they are.  The major problems as I see it are caused by firstly the lack of any form of club system.  Make no bones about it Dancesport in England is designed purely for profit, nor for any love of dance or for any wish for our couples to be able to beat the best in the world.  There are far too many organisations, most of them professional teachers organisations who all have their own agendas and reasons for wishing to keep dance school pupils within the medallist/social systems so very little encouragement is given to the thousands of very good medallist dancers in England to progress onto the open circuit.  EADA as an organisation is run by amatuers, the majority of whom are actually senior competitors or non competitors who give freely of their time and I am sure do their best but they are in reality a pretty ineffectual organisation with little or no money to invest in dancing and who are when it all boils down to it governed by the British Dance Council who lay down the rules!  Many of these rules are designed to stop amatuers from having opportunity to earn money from dancing which they could re-invest into their own dance training.  So basically the whole set up in England is not designed in anyway whatsoever to help or encourage couples to compete at the higher levels.

My dream would be a Centre of Excellence, a studio financed through the various organisations where Englands most talented could train and receive the help that they need to produce Champions.  Sadly unless I win millions on the lottery it is just a "pipe dream"

I have no doubt that we have many potential Champions in England who sadly will never achieve their potential due to lack of personal funding

I agree with most of the previous analyses. Here is an additional point:
- not only does England not have clubs to support young talent;
- not only are the constraining rules for amateurs making life unnecessary difficult;
BUT in addition to this, a not terribly big country (the UK)
- represents itself internationally as 4(!) countries - so that cuts down further on numbers and the chance to select excellent couples;
- and has its competitive dancesport field split into 3(!) separate area - open comps, medallist comps, and the Supadance League (at least that's the 3 I know of - maybe there are even more...).

The latter adds further to the fragmentation of the dancesport scene, as the medallist comp rules do not allow dancers to compete in medallist *and* open comps. Not sure about the Supadance League, but I've known some talented dancers who were 'lost' to open comps, because they did not want to miss out on the team atmosphere...

No wonder that whilst lots of fantastic dancers from all over the world come to compete in Blackpool, we do not see many UK champions in finals... pity that!CryingWilted Flower

I couldnt agree more with you all,  British dancers are at a distinct disadvantage for all the reasons you have pointed out ! Lets hope that the powers that be finally take note and start helping our dancers .

with increasing obesity in the uk, the government should provide funding to schools to offer dance lessons and clubs which would help kids get fit, keep them off the streets and also learn to respect, particularly for the opposite sex. on the show "britain's got talent" there were quite a lot of dance acts doing a wide variety of styles and from what the people said it had a really positive effect on their lives.

I agree that the support is very poor in this Country but my kids are going to a "Club",  also called "summer Camp Training", this summer! provided by their Coach, and will get training there by International Pro teachers! Now we did not wait for this to happen, you have to search, work hard to deserve it, and more important have the money to pay for it....
